Working with Film

A Portuguese Farewell (Um Adeus Português, 1986).

Tomorrow I praticipate in a 2-day event on research methods in film studies at the Catholic University of Portugal. Here is the abstract to my paper, “Working with Film”:

This talk focuses on the methodological issues involved in choosing a film or a group of films to conduct research in film studies. These choices may rest on different yet compatible perspectives: representation, authorship, national cinema, genre, otherness, among others. My aim is to address aspects related with the design and development of a research project that works with film works as objects of critical inquiry. Such aspects are deeply connected with the ability to do two things at the same time. On the one hand, to distinguish and select between the major paradigms of film studies, especially those in interpretation, criticism, history, and theory. On the other hand, to preserve and appreciate the artistic singularity of the films under scrutiny.
