Ten Issues of Cinema

12.03.2019

We were in the beginning of 2010 when the journal began to take shape at IFILNOVA - Nova Institute of Philosophy. It had been born of a conversation between me and Patrícia Silveirinha Castello Branco still in 2009. Susana Viegas joined us as the third editor soon after. We decided to associate an evocative image of a furtive gaze from Manoel de Oliveira’s Past and Present (O Passado e o Presente, 1972) with the journal. The tenth issue has been published recently. It is a good time to celebrate the longevity and quality of this project, which had a major international impact from the start that only grew with time. It seems that our intuition was right: there was room for a pluralist journal on philosophy and the moving image that avoids the simplistic opposition between analytical and continental philosophy and is structured as a series of thematic issues. We have counted on the precious help and cooperation of Susana Nascimento Duarte, Maria Irene Aparício, and William Brown, in the editing of non-thematic sections. My thanks go especially to all the authors for their articles, which formed the core of each issue. I am deeply grateful to Patrícia and Susana for this intellectual adventure. Today, we can look at Cinema: Journal of Philosophy and the Moving Image and see this past in a present loaded with future. Check it out here.
