On Personal Expression

28.01.2008

The 400 Blows.

Week 15, 2008, at the University of Kent. This week’s lecture delivered by Dr. Catherine Grant for Introduction to Narrative Cinema 2: World Cinema is titled “Art Cinema and Film Authorship”.

These are the aims of my subsequent seminar:

• discuss the notion of expression in film;
• explore the relation between personal expression, authorship, and the auteur’s image;
• understand the French New Wave in its individual influences and investment;
• analyse how The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups, 1959) is structured around Antoine’s subjectivity and emotions.

New Films from Berlin

Longing (Sehnsucht, 2006).

André Dias has organised a timely film retrospective about the New Berlin School, which emerged out of the Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie Berlin. The films will be presented from 31 January to 6 February at Cinema São Jorge in Lisbon.

I have seen some of them and they share a dry tone and an interest in the uneventful as meaningful. It is a disquieting view, a new look at the contemporary German everyday.
